Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When she was young her carnival barker father died which left Ruth's mother with no choice but to be a cleaning woman and waitress to support her family. Ruth grew up in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. Following only two school years, Ruth left to pursue the acting career. Her journey was not without obstacles. her path to success. Then, in New York she was hired to take photos for a publication about crime and drama, however no theater job opportunities came up. The following job she got was an "hat check" lady at a club but she quit and returned to Boston. There she was able to earn a living as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job. Drama studies led her to receive a degree in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
